The first international forum “Transport science: innovative solutions for business”, organised by Business Dialogue with support from Russian Railways, started work today, 22 March 2011. More than 200 delegates from eight countries have registered for the forum.

The key themes of the forum’s first day were: strategic development of science policy, scientific and technical solutions as a market product, and global trends in innovative solutions for railway transport.

The main objective of the forum was to create favourable conditions for effective communication between railway business leaders and representatives of the scientific and expert community of various countries. The main aim of the event is to jointly define the priority areas of development for scientific activity.

Vadim Morozov, First Vice President of Russian Railways, who opened the forum, assessed the importance of such an arena for discussing the scientific issues facing the industry and proposed that the forum be held annually. He noted that cooperation between representatives of science and the business community is especially important for the “1520 area”, as confirmed by the objective of setting up a scientific centre for developing the 1520 mm gauge based on the Russian Railway Transport Research Institute (VNIIZhT). To this end it is planned to issue shares in VNIIZhT and later to sell them. “Within the current year we are preparing an additional issue of shares in VNIIZhT with the aim of selling them to our partners in the 1520 area,” said Vadim Morozov.

Boris Lapidus, General Director of VNIIZhT, noted that science today has a whole range of innovative solutions for making railway transport more competitive. He also emphasised that turning scientific solutions into a fully-fledged market product is one of the key objectives for successful integration to the global railway community. Boris Lapidus added that preliminary interest in VNIIZhT shares has primarily been shown by the railways of Kazakhstan, Belarus and Ukraine. At the same time interest in the company from European railways, particularly the German, Austrian and Finnish railways, cannot be ruled out.

A press conference took place as part of the conference, the participants in which were: Boris Lapidus, Doctor of Economic Sciences, Professor, General Director of VNIIZhT, Chairman of the International Union of Railways (UIC) International Railway Research Board (IRRB); Vyacheslav Solovyev, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, First Deputy Director of the Russian Federal Nuclear Centre (the All-Russian Research Institute of Experimental Physics), Director of the Institute of Theoretical and Mathematical Physics (ITMF); and Jerzy Wisniewski, Director of the Fundamental Values Department of the International Union of Railways (UIC). Representatives of the media and news agencies at the press conference were interested in issues related to the application of new technologies in the transport industry, the creation and development of diagnostic systems, and the use of the non-destructive monitoring method. The latter, according to Boris Lapidus, is one of the most important topics in contemporary modernisation in the railway industry. Another subject of interest was contemporary methods of computer modelling, which makes it possible to achieve substantial savings on testing new equipment. Thanks to modern technologies, this method makes it possible to identify and eliminate the majority of faults in planned details at the modelling stage. Jerzy Wisniewski noted: “Innovations and development depend on cooperation between all partners.” According to B. Lapidus, unfortunately the level of demand for fundamental research in our country is still quite low. This turn has an unfavourable effect on the development of the railway industry.

The first day of the forum included a number of sessions which identified the following issues and objectives: staff and scientific policy, integrating transport systems into the international community, identifying all the barriers in the transport community, increasing the volume of traffic from Russia to Europe, and training today’s staff in logistical research.

The forum will run for two days. On 23 March the participants in the international forum “Transport science: innovative solutions for business” will discuss issues concerning high-priority information activity: reducing the costs and increasing the efficiency of transportation, and issues concerning energy efficiency and ecology as factors for a rise in competitiveness.
